Avviene spesso che un lettore, di solito un giovane, chieda a uno scrittore, in tutta semplicità, perché ha scritto un certo libro, o perché lo ha scritto così, o anche, più generalmente, perché scrive e perché gli scrittori scrivono. A questa ultima domanda, che contiene le altre, non è facile rispondere: non sempre uno scrittore è consapevole dei motivi che lo inducono a scrivere, non sempre è spinto da un motivo solo, non sempre gli stessi motivi stanno dietro all’inizio ed alla fine della stessa opera. Mi sembra che si possano configurare almeno nove motivazioni, e proverò a descriverle; ma il lettore, sia egli del mestiere o no, non avrà difficoltà a scovarne delle altre.
